About this class
[ESPAÑOL DESPUES DEL INGLES] In this class, participants will learn the basics of 3D modeling using easily available open-source software and how to use it to design 3D printable parts to make their life easier. We will be using a free software called Blender, which has been used in everything from architecture and engineering to Oscar-winning films. A laptop is all you need for this software, but a mouse is highly recommended for ease of navigation. This class will particularly focus on practical prints, so nothing like articulated dragons or octopi with The Rock's head on it. For your first class, come with an idea of some sort of low-stakes quality of life upgrade you would enjoy. This could be a towel hook, or a shelf, or a drawer organizer, or a ceramic signature stamp. Whatever it is, it shouldn't be a completely new invention nor something larger than 250mm (~9in) on any given side. In addition to instruction in 3D modeling, we will also be learning the fundamentals of how 3D printing works: the different methods, materials, brands, and resources for this emerging medium. The class will not be serialized but will serve as both an introduction and passive "office hours" for me to help out anyone with continuing projects. In the future, I would like to build in time for 3D print "finishing", which provides insight into how to make projects presentable and polished, removing that "lined" plasticky look. -- En esta clase, los participantes aprenderán los conceptos básicos del modelado 3D utilizando software de código abierto disponible y cómo usarlo para diseñar piezas imprimibles en 3D que les hagan la vida más fácil. Utilizaremos un software gratuito llamado Blender que se ha utilizado en todo tipo de proyectos desde arquitectura hasta las películas ganadoras de Oscar. Solo se necesita un laptop para usar el software, pero se recomienda un ratón de computadora también. Esta clase específicamente se centrará en los imprimibles prácticos; no haremos nada que no tenga un objetivo. Así que: para su primera clase, venga con una idea que mejoraría la vida un poco. Podría ser un gancho de toallas, un estantito, un organizador de cajones, o incluso una manipulación para estampar las firmas de los cerámicos. Sea lo que sea, no debería ser una nueva creación, ni algo que mida más de 250 mm (~9 pulg) por ninguno de sus lados. En el futuro, me gustaría incluir algunos tiempos para "completar" las piezas imprimibles 3D, significa cómo hacer proyectos más presentables y polidos, renovando la sobretierra "plasticosa", usando papel de lija y máquinas similares.
